Burn injuries can be very serious, especially when they affect a large area of the body. In most situations, hospital admission is strongly recommended. However, in certain cases where a patient prefers home treatment and understands the risks, intensive medical care at home may be arranged under close supervision.
Recently, our medical team managed a challenging case involving a patient who suffered approximately 50% body burns, including second-degree and third-degree burns.
The patient chose to receive treatment at home instead of being admitted to the hospital. After careful assessment and detailed discussion of the risks, we began an intensive 5-day home treatment plan.
The Patient’s Initial Condition
When we first assessed the patient, we noted:
- Large areas of painful blistered skin (second-degree burns)
- Some deeper areas where the skin was badly damaged (third-degree burns)
- High risk of infection
- Significant pain and inflammation
- Risk of dehydration
Burns covering 50% of the body are considered serious because they can lead to infection, fluid loss, and other complications if not treated properly.

The patient STRONGLY declined hospital admission and requested treatment at home.
After thorough risk explanation and medical assessment, we initiated an intensive 5-day advanced burn wound care protocol.
How We Managed the Burn at Home
Because this was a high-risk case, we treated it very carefully with daily monitoring and intensive medical support.
1️⃣ Preventing Infection
Burn wounds are highly prone to infection. We started appropriate antibiotics and closely monitored the patient every day for signs of infection such as fever, spreading redness, or pus formation.
Strict sterile techniques were used during every dressing change.
2️⃣ Modern Burn Dressing

Proper dressing is extremely important for burn healing.
We used modern wound dressings that:
- Protect the wound
- Keep the area clean
- Help the skin heal faster
- Reduce fluid leakage
- Encourage new healthy tissue growth
Dressings were changed 3 days once under sterile conditions to avoid contamination, unnecessary pain and stress for the patient.
3️⃣ Pain Control
Severe burns can be very painful. The patient was given adequate pain relief medication to ensure comfort and reduce inflammation. Pain levels were monitored daily.
4️⃣ Close Daily Monitoring
Because extensive burns can affect the whole body, we monitored:
- Vital signs
- Hydration level
- General condition
- Wound progress
This ensured early detection of any complications.
The Result After 5 Days
The improvement was remarkable.
By Day 5:
- The wounds became much drier
- No signs of infection were present
- Healthy new tissue started forming
- Redness and swelling reduced
- Pain improved significantly
- The patient’s overall condition stabilized
The wounds showed clear signs of healing, and the patient improved clinically.

Can Severe Burns Be Treated at Home?
Severe burns are medical emergencies and should always be assessed by a doctor. Hospital treatment is still the safest option.
However, in selected cases where patients decline admission, home-based burn treatment can be done safely with proper medical supervision, medication, and daily monitoring.
